Asian handicap (AH) is the most common football market in Malaysia. It removes the draw by giving one team a goal head start, which is why local punters call it simply “bursa”. This guide explains every common line, from 0 to ±2, with tables and worked RM10 examples.

All odds below are examples for illustration, not real prices on BK8 or any sportsbook.

How Asian handicap settles: five possible outcomes

Add the handicap to your team’s score, then compare the adjusted result. Depending on the line, your bet can settle five ways. Here they are on RM10 at decimal odds of 1.90.

Outcome What happens to your RM10 Return Profit or loss
Win Whole stake wins at 1.90 RM19.00 +RM9.00
Half-win RM5 wins at 1.90, RM5 refunded RM14.50 +RM4.50
Push Whole stake refunded RM10.00 RM0
Half-loss RM5 lost, RM5 refunded RM5.00 −RM5.00
Loss Whole stake lost RM0 −RM10.00

Half-wins and half-losses only happen on quarter lines (0.25, 0.75, 1.25). Pushes only happen on whole lines (0, 1, 2). Half lines (0.5, 1.5) always settle as a full win or full loss.

In the tables below, the favourite gives goals (minus line) and the underdog receives goals (plus line). Results are shown from the favourite’s point of view.

Line 0 (level ball, draw no bet)

Neither team gets a start. If the match is drawn, your stake comes back. Example odds: Team A 0 at 1.85, Team B 0 at 2.00.

Result Team A 0 @ 1.85 Team B 0 @ 2.00
Team A wins Win: RM18.50 Loss: RM0
Draw Push: RM10.00 Push: RM10.00
Team B wins Loss: RM0 Win: RM20.00

Quarter line ±0.25 (0 and 0.5)

Your stake splits in two: half on line 0, half on ±0.5. Sportsbooks often display it as “0/0.5” or “0-0.5”. Example odds: favourite -0.25 at 2.00, underdog +0.25 at 1.85.

Result Favourite -0.25 @ 2.00 Underdog +0.25 @ 1.85
Favourite wins by any margin Win: RM20.00 Loss: RM0
Draw Half-loss: RM5.00 Half-win: RM14.25
Favourite loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM18.50

On the draw, the underdog’s half-win is RM5 × 1.85 = RM9.25, plus the RM5 refunded.

Half line ±0.5 (half ball)

No refunds here. The favourite must win; the underdog wins your bet on a draw or a win. Example odds: 1.95 on both sides.

Result Favourite -0.5 @ 1.95 Underdog +0.5 @ 1.95
Favourite wins by any margin Win: RM19.50 Loss: RM0
Draw Loss: RM0 Win: RM19.50
Favourite loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM19.50

-0.5 settles exactly like backing the favourite in 1X2, usually at a different price.

Quarter line ±0.75 (0.5 and 1)

Half your stake is on ±0.5 and half on ±1. Often displayed as “0.5/1” or “0.5-1”. Example odds: favourite -0.75 at 2.10, underdog +0.75 at 1.80.

Result Favourite -0.75 @ 2.10 Underdog +0.75 @ 1.80
Favourite wins by 2 or more Win: RM21.00 Loss: RM0
Favourite wins by exactly 1 Half-win: RM15.50 Half-loss: RM5.00
Draw Loss: RM0 Win: RM18.00
Favourite loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM18.00

A one-goal favourite win pays RM5 × 2.10 = RM10.50 plus the RM5 refund.

Whole line ±1 (one ball)

A one-goal favourite win is a push. Example odds: favourite -1 at 2.20, underdog +1 at 1.72.

Result Favourite -1 @ 2.20 Underdog +1 @ 1.72
Favourite wins by 2 or more Win: RM22.00 Loss: RM0
Favourite wins by exactly 1 Push: RM10.00 Push: RM10.00
Draw Loss: RM0 Win: RM17.20
Favourite loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM17.20

Quarter line ±1.25 (1 and 1.5)

Half your stake is on ±1 and half on ±1.5. Often shown as “1/1.5” or “1-1.5”. Example odds: favourite -1.25 at 2.30, underdog +1.25 at 1.65.

Result Favourite -1.25 @ 2.30 Underdog +1.25 @ 1.65
Favourite wins by 2 or more Win: RM23.00 Loss: RM0
Favourite wins by exactly 1 Half-loss: RM5.00 Half-win: RM13.25
Draw Loss: RM0 Win: RM16.50
Favourite loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM16.50

The underdog’s half-win is RM5 × 1.65 = RM8.25 plus RM5 back.

Half line ±1.5 (one and a half balls)

The favourite must win by two or more. No pushes. Example odds: favourite -1.5 at 2.40, underdog +1.5 at 1.60.

Result Favourite -1.5 @ 2.40 Underdog +1.5 @ 1.60
Favourite wins by 2 or more Win: RM24.00 Loss: RM0
Favourite wins by exactly 1 Loss: RM0 Win: RM16.00
Draw Loss: RM0 Win: RM16.00
Favourite loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM16.00

Whole line ±2 (two balls)

Used when one side is far stronger, such as a top EPL side at home to a newly promoted club. A two-goal win is a push. Example odds: 1.95 on both sides.

Result Favourite -2 @ 1.95 Underdog +2 @ 1.95
Favourite wins by 3 or more Win: RM19.50 Loss: RM0
Favourite wins by exactly 2 Push: RM10.00 Push: RM10.00
Favourite wins by 1, draws or loses Loss: RM0 Win: RM19.50

Lines continue beyond ±2 in the same pattern (±2.25, ±2.5 and so on).

Cheat sheet: what the favourite needs

Line Full win Partial result Loss
0 Win Draw = push Lose
-0.25 Win Draw = half-loss Lose
-0.5 Win none Draw or lose
-0.75 Win by 2+ Win by 1 = half-win Draw or lose
-1 Win by 2+ Win by 1 = push Draw or lose
-1.25 Win by 2+ Win by 1 = half-loss Draw or lose
-1.5 Win by 2+ none Win by 1, draw or lose
-2 Win by 3+ Win by 2 = push Win by 1, draw or lose

The underdog’s outcome is the mirror image of each row. Terms like push and half-win are also defined in our betting glossary.

Reading Asian handicap odds in Malaysian format

Many Asian sportsbooks show Asian handicap prices in Malaysian odds by default. Positive Malaysian odds are your profit per RM1. Negative odds mean you risk that amount to win RM1.

Malaysian Decimal Hong Kong
0.95 1.95 0.95
0.80 1.80 0.80
-0.95 2.05 1.05
-0.80 2.25 1.25

Conversion: for positive Malaysian odds, decimal = Malaysian + 1. For negative ones, decimal = 1 + (1 ÷ the number without the minus sign).

Example. You back Team B +0.25 at -0.90 Malaysian, risking RM10. If Team B wins, you profit RM10 ÷ 0.90 = RM11.11. If the match is drawn, it’s a half-win: RM5.56 profit on the winning half, plus RM5 refunded. Sportsbooks differ on how the stake box works with negative odds, so check the bet slip’s risk and payout figures before you confirm.

Asian handicap vs 1X2: same match, different questions

Take an EPL match where the home side is a clear favourite. Three ways to back them, with example odds and RM10 stakes:

Bet Example odds Wins if Draw Away win
Home win (1X2) 1.50 Home wins Loss Loss
Home -0.5 (AH) 1.52 Home wins Loss Loss
Home -1 (AH) 2.05 Home wins by 2+ (push on 1) Loss Loss
Away +1 (AH) 1.80 Away wins, draw, or push on a 1-goal home win Win Win

The point isn’t that one bet is better. Each line asks a different question about the margin of victory, and the price reflects how likely the bookmaker thinks that margin is. Asian handicap simply gives you more precise questions to choose from.

For a Liga Super match between two evenly matched sides, the line is often 0 or ±0.25. For a Harimau Malaya qualifier against a much weaker side, it could be -2 or more. Reading the line tells you how the market rates the gap between the teams.

Common mistakes

Most Asian handicap errors come from misreading the line, not from picking the wrong team.

  • Reading -0.25 as “safe”. A draw still costs half your stake.
  • Forgetting the 90-minute rule. Extra time and penalties don’t count on standard handicap bets.
  • Misreading quarter-line notation. “0.5/1” is -0.75 for the team giving goals, not two separate bets you chose.
  • Ignoring the in-play score rule. Live handicap bets usually count only goals after your bet.
  • Picking the line for its price. A higher price on -1.5 reflects a lower chance, not better value.
  • Chasing with bigger lines. Moving to -2 to win back a loss raises your risk, not your odds.

Troubleshooting

My bet was rejected or the odds changed. Prices move as money comes in and during play. Accept the new price only if you still want the bet.

My bet settled as a half-loss and I expected a push. You probably backed a quarter line (-0.25 or -1.25), not a whole line. Check the line in bet history.

The live bet settled differently from the final score. In-play handicap usually starts from the score when your bet was accepted. Compare the goals scored after your bet time.

I can’t find the handicap market for a match. Smaller leagues, including some Liga Super fixtures, may have fewer markets or none on some providers. Try another of the three sportsbook tiles.

The same thinking applies to tournament football. Our World Cup betting guide shows how handicap lines are used from group stage to final. Treat every bet as entertainment that costs money, and stop when it isn’t fun.

Frequently asked questions

What does Asian handicap mean?

It's a football market where one team starts with a goal advantage or deficit. The handicap is added to the final score, and the adjusted result decides your bet. Half lines (like -0.5) remove the draw; whole lines (like -1) can refund your stake; quarter lines (like -0.25) split your stake across two lines.

What is the difference between -0.25 and -0.5?

At -0.5 your team must win; a draw loses the whole stake. At -0.25 half your stake is on 0 and half on -0.5, so a draw refunds one half and loses the other. You lose only half your stake on a draw.

What is a half-win?

On a quarter line, half your stake wins at the quoted odds and the other half is refunded. RM10 at 1.90 with a half-win returns RM14.50: RM9.50 from the winning half plus RM5 back.

Does Asian handicap include extra time?

Normally no. Football handicap bets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties are ignored unless the market says otherwise, such as a 'to qualify' market. Check the rules page of the sportsbook you use.

How does live Asian handicap work?

On most Asian sportsbooks, in-play handicap bets count only the goals scored after your bet is accepted. If you back a team at -0.5 at 1-0, the bet starts from 0-0. Confirm the rule on the rules page of BK8 Sports, Saba Sports or CMD Sports before betting live.

What does 'bursa' mean?

In Malaysian betting slang, 'bursa' refers to the handicap odds market, and 'bola' to football. You may also hear lines described in 'balls', so a 'half ball' is a 0.5-goal handicap.
